What is dry ice made of?
Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO₂). It is extremely cold at -109.3°F (-78.5°C) and turns directly into gas as it warms (sublimates).
Is it safe to touch dry ice with bare hands?
No. Direct skin contact with dry ice can cause severe frostbite. Always handle it with insulated gloves or tongs.
Can I store dry ice in a sealed container?
No. As dry ice sublimates into gas, pressure builds up. A sealed container can explode. Always store it in a well-ventilated, non-airtight cooler.
Is it safe to use dry ice indoors?
Use caution. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas, which can displace oxygen. Only use it in well-ventilated areas.
How should I dispose of unused dry ice?
Let it sublimate in a well-ventilated area, away from people and pets. Never put it down a drain or in the trash.
Can dry ice be used in drinks or food?
Only if it is used safely. Never swallow dry ice or place it directly in food/drinks meant to be consumed. Wait until it fully evaporates.
How long does dry ice last?
Dry ice typically lasts 18–24 hours in a standard cooler, depending on the amount and insulation.
Is dry ice safe to transport in a car?
Yes, but keep windows cracked or ventilated. CO₂ gas buildup can be dangerous in a confined space.
Can children or pets be around dry ice?
Children and pets should be closely supervised. Never let them touch or play with dry ice.
What should I do if someone touches dry ice?
